RISE Zambia provides scholarships for higher education in technical and trade fields for students in rural Zambia.
Launched in 2015, RISE Zambia is an initiative of 14+ Foundation, a non-profit that builds and manages primary schools in rural Zambia. We strongly believe that each and every RISE Scholar can create a better future for themselves and for their country.
WHY ZAMBIA?
RISE Zambia is addressing a critical shortage of healthcare professionals identified by the World Health Organization. To address this shortage, the Zambia National Health Strategic Plan has identified aggressive goals for dramatically increasing staffing. Key challenges include a low ratio of skilled providers to the population as well as inadequate levels of appropriate training.
OUR GOALS
The total cost of a full three-year nursing program in Zambia, including room and board, is less than 10% of the average cost of a public nursing program in the United States (as of April 2024). With the same funding, we can help educate 5x as many nurses in Zambia as in the U.S. Through this investment, RISE seeks to:
Provide financial support to deserving students for tuition, room & board, and necessary expenses to help them pursue their dreams
Extend the program's reach through regular student visits to primary schools in local villages to encourage and inspire the next generation
Intensive support and mentorship for students with a goal of 90% graduation and post-graduation employment in Zambia. As of April 2024, our success rate holds steady at 96%.
Joan Shulman Scholarship for Nursing Studies
The first of our scholarships - the Joan Shulman Scholarship for Nursing Studies - was awarded to Agness Mayani, who began her studies at Makeni College School of Nursing in January 2016.
RISE Zambia has since provided 30 scholarships for nursing degrees at St. Luke’s Mpanshya Mission College of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health, Macha Mission Hospital & Nursing School, and the Unviersity Teaching Hospital.
These are exciting new relationships with schools that provides strong mentorship, close supervision and post-graduation employment opportunities.
RISE Zambia scholarships provide 100% of educational funding including a stipend for room and board. Just as important, we also establish a mentor/advisor program for each student to provide guidance and support and ensure their success.
PAYING IT FORWARD
As only 11% of Zambian students complete secondary school and 3% of Zambian students complete post-secondary school, RISE Scholars meet with rural grade school students to encourage them and emphasize the importance of education and maximize the long-term benefit for Zambia.
